Fourth Quarter and Final Grades for Students in Grades 7-12

As we continue with online learning through the fourth quarter, the district remains committed to providing students every opportunity to successfully end this challenging school year. The most important thing students and parents need to know is that participation in class is required for the duration of the school year. It is very important to ensure that all students are engaged in remote learning, completing assigned work, asking questions and requesting help as needed.

2019-20 Fourth Quarter and Final Grades FAQ

Q. How will Fourth Quarter grades be calculated?

A: Teachers will prioritize the remaining NYS standards, and develop assignments which are determined to be essential for course completion.  Teachers will distribute a list of these assignments (with due dates) to students no later than May 11th.

Upon completion, students will receive feedback, including numerical grades, on their fourth quarter assignments; students will also receive feedback as to how to improve the grade on each assignment. Students will have the ability to respond to feedback/revise/make corrections on assignments over the course of the fourth quarter.

Upon completion of the Fourth Quarter essential assignments, students will receive the following grades for the fourth quarter:

Pass with Distinction: Student has mastered or exceeded the standards, and

     earned the equivalent of 85-100.

Pass: Student has met the standards, and earned the equivalent of 65-84.

Incomplete:   Student has not completed the 4th quarter assignments and/or

has not met the standards, and no grade can be assigned.

No numerical grades will be assigned as quarter grades for the Fourth Quarter.

Q. How will final course grades be calculated?

A. Students’ final course grade will be calculated as an average of the first 3 quarters AND successfully earning “Pass or Pass with Distinction” in the fourth quarter.

The final average will be a numerical grade calculated by taking the average of the first three quarters. A student must earn a Pass or Pass with Distinction in the Fourth Quarter to receive a final average/course grade. Students receiving an Incomplete in the Fourth Quarter must complete the essential assignments in order to receive a Pass or Pass with Distinction.

Example: Quarter 1 = 80, Quarter 2 = 90, Quarter 3 = 85, Quarter 4= Pass or Pass with Distinction

Grade for course = 85 (average of Q1-3 and Pass or Pass with Distinction in Quarter 4).

NO GRADES CAN BE ASSIGNED TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE AN “INCOMPLETE”

IN THE FOURTH QUARTER.  STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE FOURTH QUARTER ASSIGNMENTS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A FINAL COURSE GRADE.

Q: Will there be final exams?

A:  No. There will be no final exams this year.  Only work assigned over the course of the school year will count toward student final average.

Students who earn course credit by passing the class are waived from the NYS regents

exam for that course. This waiver is for this school year only.

Students who owe assignments are encouraged to contact their teachers for

guidance.

Q: What will happen if a student does not complete the work assigned during the Fourth Quarter?

Students who receive an incomplete in the Fourth Quarter or who receive a failing grade for the year (based on Q 1-3) will be contacted by Mrs. Passaro or Mrs. Beck to make arrangements to complete the 4th quarter work and/or to enroll in  summer school and/or credit recovery.
