Medical Excuses from Physical Education Class

POLICY: MEDICAL EXCUSES FROM PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR MORE THAN TWO DAYS REQUIRE A DOCTOR’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE PROBLEM. THE STATEMENT, ON THE PHYSICIAN’S LETTERHEAD, MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING:

  1. A description of the problem
  2. A recommendation that the student not participate in physical education classes or that participation be limited
  3. A statement of the period of time for which the student needs to be excused, or placed on Limited Activity status.

It is the student’s obligation to file the doctor’s statement with the school nurse. The nurse will notify the counselor and the office of the excuse and the need for a schedule change should the excuse be a long-term one. Information regarding the excuse or limitation will also be sent to the physical education instructor.

A student may be excused from physical activities for a relatively short period of time so that no schedule change is required. (A doctor’s statement is still required.) Such a student will be required to remain in his physical education class and to continue to attend that class as scheduled so that he may observe, learn and in some cases, participate in activities which are within the limits of the doctor’s recommendation.

If the student’s excuse is for a week or less, the student will remain in the class with written assignments to keep the student accountable for the time he/she can not participate.

If the student’s excuse is for more than a week, the student will report to study hall until the student is able to participate again.

NOTE: Should a student be in need of a medical excuse, which limits or excludes his participation in BOCES classes, the above procedure should be followed.

The Principal, in consultation with the BOCES Guidance Coordinator, will ascertain whether or not the student should continue to attend BOCES classes during the period of the excuse. In the event the student is to attend school classes but not BOCES classes, it will be the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation home from school in the case of PM BOCES students or to provide transportation to school in the case of AM BOCES students.
